Attention Resistance
I have written about how social media has given me anxiety and made my life miserable.
Over the past few months, I’ve actively reduced my social media usage. It wasn’t easy at first—I often felt the urge to check in.
One of my biggest steps was deleting all social apps from my phone. I limited access to my laptop, where I logged in briefly, checked updates, and logged out immediately. Now, social media barely feels like a part of my daily life, and I am no longer spending hours everyday in these apps.
What’s interesting is how my mindset has changed. When I do log in, I lose interest within minutes. I’ve grown to dislike text-based social media so much that I naturally log out. This tells me I’m making real progress in breaking free from its grip. Reels and Shorts are challenging since they make it so easy to relax and switch off the mind. While I still experience FOMO, I am actively seeking healthier ways to consume content—without the toxicity of social media.
The real issue isn’t just social media—it’s also our addiction to convenience. Our phones provide an easy escape from discomfort, boredom, and uncertainty. Instead of talking to people, observing our surroundings, or simply being present, we default to our phones.
To combat this, I’ve taken deliberate steps: deleting social apps, logging out from websites, unsubscribing from newsletters, and decluttering my home screen and so much more which I will write about soon. I’m being intentional about my actions and mindful of my content consumption.
Breaking free from social media isn’t just about quitting apps; it’s about reclaiming attention and using it wisely. Instead of mindless scrolling, I want to focus on meaningful activities—reading, learning new skills, engaging in real conversations, or simply being present in the moment. By choosing how I spend my time intentionally, I regain control and cultivate deeper, more fulfilling experiences.
As the saying goes, Attention is one of the rarest and purest forms of generosity. I must be conscious and selective about where I invest it.
